The following knowledge questions relate directly to the knowledge requirements of the unit. This includes

Scenario

The Pine Tree Early Childhood Education and Care Service caters for a wide variety of families from different cultural backgrounds. They pride themselves on providing an inclusive environment that is respectful of all families and children. Sarah, the team leader in the kindy room, is very proud of her Aboriginal heritage. She enjoys sharing her culture with children and colleagues and is pleased to have contributed to a better understanding of her people.

At a recent staff meeting the coordinator announced that Sarah would be given extra time to plan activities to for National Sorry Day. National Sorry Day is held on the 26th May each year to acknowledge and recognise members of the Stolen Generations, those people who were affected by the government policy of forcibly removing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families. Jack and Kate, the other educators in the kindy room, seemed surprised when they heard about the time Sarah had been given. When Sarah was on her lunch break and out of the room, Kate commented that it was unfair that Sarah got extra time to prepare forNational Sorry Day. Kate told Jack that she did not like having to incorporate this into the curriculum. “I know that bad things happened to Aboriginal people hundreds of years ago, but do they really need a Sorry Day? Wouldn’t it be better if they moved on?” Jack did not respond to Kate’s comments and continuing settling the children to sleep.

Read the scenario and answer the questions that follow.

Scenario

Katerina and Grygoriy Kovalenko arrived in Australia as refugees with their son Petro (aged 3 years) and baby daughter Anastasia .They fled their home in Ukraine during the war with Russia after the school at which they were both teachers was destroyed in amissile attack. They also witnessed the death of two neighbours. Katerina and Grygoriy both have basic English skills and have managed to find a small two-bedroom flat to live in. Although they do not have any family in Australia, there is a strong Ukrainian community in the local area. Grygoriy has found a job as a cleaner and he and Katerina would like their children to start childcare to help them to learn English and have a chance to be with other children. They have come with a Ukrainian speaking member of the local community to meet with the co-ordiantor of your service to have a look around.

a) Identify three protective factors that will assist the Kovalenko family as they settle in Australia

b) Complete the table below to identify potential physical, mental and emotional health care needs that the family may have. Identify two (2) for each area
