Answer any three questions below by this due date at the latest (4 pts. each). Answer your chosen three questions all in the same initial post, not as three separate initial posts. Click on ‘reply’ at bottom of this discussion, and number each question you answer for clarity. Initial posts should be substantive: at least 4 -5 complete sentences. Be clear and concise. You cannot post just one answer to one question, then come back at a later time and post another answer to another question, and so on. All three answers must be included in your initial post for full credit eligibility. If any answers are missing in your initial post, you will receive a lesser grade depending on what’s missing. Once you make your initial post, the discussion will unlock for you to read and engage with your peers on it, as follows: DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. Do any of these new terms, words, or concepts this documentary mentions relate to the topic you plan on writing about in your research paper? If so, what term/concept, and how does it relate to your chosen problem? 2. How has seeing this documentary deepened your understanding of America’s dilemma of unhealthy eating? For example, how has it deepened your knowledge of the problem of industrialized farming that has by now replaced traditional farming, and to what extent has it affected you, and by extension others, in your daily eating habits, or the environment? 3. How has viewing this documentary increased your awareness of how the wheels of corporate America turn ‘behind closed doors’ –a lot of the reporting in Food, Inc. exposes unethical and illegal industrialized farming practices, and inhumane treatment of animals, for example, which are hidden from the general public. Why do you think these corporate practices are shielded from public knowledge? 4. How has what you learned from watching this documentary deepened your understanding of the food industry’s harmful effects on human health and the environment? For example, are you now hesitant to go to your favorite fast food joint for a hamburger and fries (or whatever your favorite meal is)? Why? What do you know now that you didn’t before, and why has it affected you, say to avoid eating fast food or restaurant menu items like hamburgers, steaks, lasagna, hot dogs from now on? 5. How could you write about a negative effect that Food, Inc. reveals in your research paper? You may want to think about this question in terms of causes and effects: for ex. ‘here is one or more negative effects,’ and ‘this or these are the causes.’ Be as specific as you can in discussing these causes and effects, so we can clearly understand them. 6. What connections can you draw from this documentary to King Corn, for example ‘Frankencorn?’ Clearly explain any connections you make, and how making them deepens your understanding of the broader issue, in other words, can you connect these specific connections to the bigger picture of America’s food industry’s harmful effects? Discuss. 7. What viable – realistic steps could we take on any level – individually, as a community, or as a cultural collective, to solve any of these negative effects of industrialized farming that this documentary reveals and reports on? Your ideas for solutions can be based on the short-term future (within the next month, or year), or long-term future (2 years, 5 years, etc).
