Feedback to Learner While Harriet Tubman was free and living in freedom in the North in the 1850s, she assisted over 70 other runaway slaves fleeing their Maryland farms. She didn’t hesitate to free the enslaved people using the Underground Railroad. Numerous enslaved people she released, as well as countless others, dubbed her “Moses.” As an abolitionist and civil rights advocate, like Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King, her role as an abolitionist and civil rights advocates inspired others, including Frederick Douglass and John Brown. In 2016, the United States Treasury chose to put her on the $20 bill, a tribute to her legacy. Harriet Tubman was a courageous woman who led the Underground Railroad in the Civil War era. In helping enslaved people get on the Freedom Train, she was partially responsible for ending the institution of slavery.
