Questions to Ask Yourself While Watching the Movie:

What developmental stages are represented in the film? What connections can I make to each chapter in the unit? How is cognitive development portrayed? How do they show the characters thinking, planning, problem-solving, and or using language (reading)? What type of physical development can you observe in the characters? What choices do the characters make that might reflect brain development at that stage? What physical milestones are they reaching/not reaching that are appropriate for the stage? What areas of socio-emotional development can you observe? Can you identify patterns of attachment, friendship, personality, personal or emotional care?

Checklist

Paper Length

The paper should be two to four pages in length.

The paper should, summarize, describe, and review important aspects of physical, cognitive, and socioemotional development for the age stage(s) represented in the unit. You should do this with a combination of developmental theories, concepts, principles, research, and/or milestones. Often organizing your papers by domains can help address each element and create a good flow.

Identify three theories of development related to the age stage(s)

Review the overview of theories on page 27 in your textbook to get started. Using the overview and the chapters in the unit identify theories you found represented in the film. For example, you may select Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. Briefly describe his theory, the stage which represents the unit (e.g. infancy-sensorimotor stage). After explaining the theory provide an example from the movie showing how it applies. Do this for three different theories. You should also find other theories within the chapters as well. For example, during the infancy stage you might select the dynamics systems theory (p.86).

Concepts, principles, research, and/or milestones

Select a fact/statistic, describe a concept, identify a milestone, and/or paraphrase research in each physical, cognitive, socio-emotional domains. Describe the fact, concept, milestone, or research and then provide an example from the film that demonstrates or contradicts the information. Here is an example of a research in socio-emotive development: Research has found parents pay a significant role in a childs development of
