For a compare and contrast composition, you want your thesis to do three things: Name the two topics you’ll be discussing Identify your method of development — are you comparing, contrasting, or both? Set up the three points you plan to discuss for each of your topics. Remember, they need to be consistent throughout the essay. If you’re going to talk about Point 1, Point 2, and Point 3 for Topic A, you need to discuss those exact same points for Topic B. The topic I chose is Inpatient vs outpatient nursing, that is what my essay needs to be about. Essay #1 Compare/Contrast Essay Approved Topics military life/civilian life paper charting/digital charting electronic books/paper books one nursing area of practice with another (ex: outpatient nursing/inpatient nursing) growing up an only child/ growing up with siblings To create your essay, take each point in your outline and turn it into one or two complete sentences. Remember to take any feedback provided by your instructor for your outline assignment and apply it to your essay draft. Your essay should: Be at least 1000 words long (and should not exceed 1200 words) Follow all conventions of grammar, style, structure, and organization discussed in this course Have a clear introduction with a thesis statement that sets up the main points Have body paragraphs that have a single point (these points relate directly back to the thesis) and a concluding paragraph that wraps it all up Use the point by point method of comparison Your essay should AVOID: Outside research First or second person Judgment about a topic being better; you are only comparing and contrasting them.
