For this essay, you are going to argue and prove a claim related to the novel in a standard 5-paragraph essay on the book, “A Lesson Before Dying”. Structure: Paragraph 1: Introduction – attention getter, context & background information, clarify claim, and state position in thesis statement Paragraph 2: Point – in this paragraph, you argue and prove your claim (thesis) with 2 pieces of textual evidence (MLA citations) Paragraph 3: Counterpoint – in this paragraph, you argue the other side of the claim, with 2 pieces of textual evidence (MLA citations) Paragraph 4: Refutation – in this paragraph, you argue against the counterpoint, with 2 pieces of textual evidence (MLA citations), and focus back on your original point in paragraph 2. Paragraph 5: Conclusion – Recap and express final thoughts to strengthen claim Formatting: All formatting details are the same as previous formal essays. All citations, headers, heading, and Works Cited page must be done in MLA format. The novel A Lesson Before Dying is the only source you will need to use. Claim Options: Grant is an effective/ineffective teacher. Grant and Vivian have a good/ bad relationship. Grant/Jefferson truly learns the “lesson” of the novel. A man vs. ____________ conflict is the most important one in the novel. Grant will leave/never leave the plantation. You can find the book online. The pages don’t matter as long as it haves everything it needs.
