For this response paper, I want you to think about discrimination on the basis of race and gender: Is holistic evaluation fair where included in such evaluation is consideration of an applicant’s race or gender as part of the ability to contribute to diversity? Remember some facts about the morality of discrimination. Treating people differently is permissible morally in many contexts that are recognized widely. This is also true when the basis for treating people differently is based on a factor that is not within one’s control, factors such as family membership or age or sex. The examples in class were family reunions and senior living communities and women’s sports teams under Title IX. All of these examples discrimination that is considered morally permissible. Here is the question for you to answer: What would be an argument against using race and/or sex as a qualification? Is holistic evaluation fair? Explain your answer. If you think that such holistic evaluation would not be fair, focus on the reasons against affirmative action articulated by Sandel on pages 172 to 174. The articles by Thomas and McWhorter provide illustrations of what Sandel describes as the “practical” argument against Affirmative Action.
