Summarizing Models and Explanations for Unit 3 (Complete 3 questions) For each

Summarizing Models and Explanations for Unit 3 (Complete 3 questions)

For each of the three sets, choose one of the two explanations to complete. Feel free to use models, diagrams, and/or written explanation. Each explanation should be about two paragraph or one drawn diagram with a paragraph explanation. Be sure to provide a reference for any additional resources you use. Remember that you can do this assignment with a partner!

Set One: Weather and Climate – Pick either A or B.

Option A: Weather

Look back at our SeeSaw Observations of the Weather and Ecosystems

Find two examples of different types of weather (e.g., rain, thunderstorm, sunny skies, cloudy weather, wind, extreme humidity). Explain what causes this weather to form.

Looking at your observations of the weather for three days, does your weather match the climate for your area? Why or why not? To look up the climate for your area, use this website: https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/@4203696/climate (Feel free to use other websites for more information. Please just be sure to provide the reference/link for the information).

Option B: Climate Differences

Look up the climate for a family member, friend, or acquaintance that lives in a different region of the country or even another country. Describe how their climate is different from ours.

Explain why our climate is different from their climate. (Be sure to consider information like latitude, elevation, proximity to water, wind patterns, etc). You can use this website: https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/@4203696/climate (Feel to use other websites for more information. Please just be sure provide the reference/link for the information).

Set 2: Ecosystems – Pick either A or B

Option A: Interactions in Your Ecosystem

Return back to your observations of an ecosystem throughout the semester and describe:

How do living things interact with each other in your ecosystem? Describe at least 4 different types of interactions. (think about predator/prey; symbiotic relationships; etc)

How does energy move through the ecosystem through the ecosystem?

How does either nitrogen or carbon cycle through the ecosystem

(Potential animals include: wolves, bears, deer, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, and others you observed.)

Option B: Comparing Ecosystems

Returning back to your observations of an ecosystem throughout the semester: How do the interactions in your ecosystem compare and contrast to the interactions in another type of ecosystem? (e.g., an ocean ecosystem or a prairie ecosystem). Consider:

The types of organisms in the ecosystems

How the organisms interact in the ecosystem (think about predator/prey; symbiotic relationships; etc)

How energy and carbon/nitrogen move through the ecosystem.

Set 3: Evolution – Pick either A or B

Micacis

Option A: Evolution of wolves

Around 60 million years ago, there was a species of dog known as Micacis. Scientists hypothesize that the modern wild wolf evolved from this species. Describe how the Micacis could have evolved into the modern wild wolf and the evidence that scientist have this evolution occurs. In your explanation, be sure to describe the steps for natural selection and some of the types of evidence from the module. You can draw and/or write your ideas.

Option B: Evolution of dog breeds

Around 60 million years ago, there was a species of dog known as Micacis. Scientists hypothesize that the modern dog breeds and wild wolves descended from this species. Compare and contrast the process of how dog breeds were artificially selected from a common ancestor with the process of how wild wolves would evolve from Micacis. In your explanation, be sure to describe the steps for natural selection and artificial selection. You can draw and/or write your ideas.

Grading

Given the importance of understanding this content, in this assignment, you will have the opportunity to resubmit your work based on my feedback. The resubmission will be regraded.

This rubric will be used for each question.
