The media landscape continues to change, and most consumers of news now get their updates online. All TV and radio and many print media outlets, however, continue to publish or broadcast by more traditional means, though they all have an online presence. There is also an increasing number of media outlets that only have an online presence, some of them changing the platform of their original delivery—such as former newspapers that might only exist online today—and others that have only ever existed on the Internet, such as the Huffington Post and many similar online news sites. Further complicating and changing the way most of us stay up-to-date, “news” is also increasingly distributed through social media, whether as Tweets or Facebook posts or as links attached to other social media, mixed into the data stream of personal posts, entertainment news, videos, advertisements, “click bait,” pictures of children or kittens and inspirational sayings. Choose three traditional print or broadcast news media outlets, and compare them to their online extensions or websites. For each news media outlet, compare online and traditional forms in terms of content, interactivity, and specific features such as opinion columns, graphics, advertisements, topics, announcements, and editorials. Compare traditional and online versions of each media outlet in terms of news value provided. In your discussion, answer the following questions: Does the website provide the same news content as the print or broadcast version? What is added to or omitted from the website version? Does the website feature interactive components such as discussion boards or response functions for consumers? Is there a corresponding feature in the traditional medium? Explain. Which other features are unique to the online or website version and absent from the traditional version of each media outlet? In turn, which features are unique to the traditional form of the media outlet? Does the website add value for you as a consumer of news? Do you or will you seek more of your news online? If so, why? If not, why not?
