There are many resources available for health promotion. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the appropriateness of a health promotion resource for Māori and suggest appropriate changes if necessary. This involves asking the Māori consumer about the appropriateness from their perspective. A Māori health model is used to guide this analysis and reference is made to cultural safety.

Process and Preparation for Presentation

  1. Identify a Māori Consumer (A person who identifies as Māori)

  • Meet with your peer student.

  • Before approaching your chosen consumer discuss their general details with your tutor who may also assist you in identifying a consumer and in making contact.

The consumer does not have to be experiencing the health issue related to the Health Promotion resource

Gather the information required.

  • If uncertain about your consumer check with your lecturer, approach your consumer for informed consent (see attached information sheet and consent form).

  • Identify an existing health promotion resource that maybe appropriate to your consumer or choose a resource with your consumer (brochure, leaflet or media clip that provides health promotion information).

  • Obtain from the Māori consumer whether they believe the resource is appropiate from a Māori cultural perspective.

  • With understanding the consumers perspective determine if the resource is culturally safe

Critique the Health Promotion Resource.

  • Give a brief summary of the necessity for this resource including relevant Maori health demographics.

  • Use the feedback from the Māori consumer , their knowledge of cultural safety and your chosen Māori health model to critique the suitability of the health promotion resource for Māori.

  • Use appropriate literature to support your analysis.

Plan your presentation

  • Plan your presentation to ensure that appropriate content is covered and that the process undertaken in this project is demonstrated. (see learning outcomes 3 and 4 and grading guide).

  • Ensure that presentation is of an appropriate academic standard (see academic requirements – grading mark sheet).

  • Practice your presentation.

Present

  • Upload your completed presentation if using powerpoint, notes and references at the time requested.

  • Ensure you hand in reference list, completed consent form, a copy of the original health information or media clip and a hardcopy of your presentation (also email presentation and powerpoint)
