Inauguration on March 4, 1801. Thomas Jefferson is inaugurated as the third President of the United States, becoming the first president to be inaugurated in Washington, D.C. Aaron Burr, who had equaled Jefferson in electoral votes until losing the House election, is installed as Vice President.

Tripoli declares war on May 14, 1801. Yusuf Karamini, Pasha of Tripoli, declares war on the US by symbolically tearing down the flagpole at the US Consulate. The United States took this measure after refusing to pay further tribute to the Tripolitans in exchange for protection against piracy against American ships.

William C.C. Claiborne is appointed as the new territory governor of Mississippi on July 10, 1801.

Jefferson addresses Congress on December 8, 1801. President Jefferson writes his first speech to the newly assembled United States Congress, which is read out by the House clerk. Jefferson established the practice of not giving the State of the Union speech in person, which was not broken until Woodrow Wilson’s term.

8 January 1802 The United States and the United Kingdom meet. The treaty of 1794 is finalized by a convention between the United States and Britain. A commission determines that the United States owes British people £2,664, 000 in settlement of Revolutionary War claims.

War with Tripoli began on February 6, 1802. Congress declares war on Tripoli and authorizes the arming of commercial ships to repel assaults.
